Acne Scars

Scars result when the skin repairs wounds caused by accident, disease, or surgery. The more the skin is damaged and the longer it takes to heal, the greater the chance of a noticeable scar.

Treatment of scars depends on the type of scar, shape, depth, type of skin and most importantly attitude and motivation of the patient. Acne(pimple) scars are of different shapes & size: round, oval, linear, worm like. Each type of scar needs a special & different treatment.

Treatment of Scars

Creams do not help in management of scars. Therefore in almost all cases, different procedures are needed for management of scars. Any treatment should be safe, easy, and without any after effects or side effects.

Treatment options

  • Pixel laser
  • Dermaroller

Fractional (Pixel) Laser

Fractional laser is the basic treatment of most scars. It is called fractional because laser affects only a fraction of the treated area. Therefore it is very safe.

This is how pixel laser is done

What is Pixel laser?

In this technology, the Pixel laser treats only a small fraction of the skin at a time (about 25-35%), and leaves the rest of the skin unaffected. There may be a slight redness for one day & the patient can go to work the very same day. Treatment is quick- only 15 minutes.

Why is it better?

It works well for irregular scars like oval, linear, post injury scars. Healing and recovery are rapid. It is a very safe, effective & painless treatment. 4-6 sessions are needed once in 2-3 weeks. It by itself gives 60% results.

In this method, an instrument called Dermaroller consisting of tiny needles is rolled over the scars. It is done after applying an anaesthetic cream to the treatment area to be left for about 35-40min. It is followed by mild redness & swelling of the treated area for 2-3 days. It is done once in 3-4 weeks and is useful for scars which are deeper and have loose skin.

TCA Cross

Here, a chemical called Trichloro Acetic Acid is applied onto the Scars. It results in mild redness of the treated area lasting for 1-2 days. It gives good results for the tiny pinhole like scars. It is a painless procedure & no anaesthesia needed.

In this technique, after local injection of anaesthesia, a needle is inserted underneath the skin to break the fibres that have been pulling the scar down. This relaxes the scars & the scar is lifted up. This also results in mild redness & swelling of the treated area for 3-4 days.

Punch Elevation

Here, a punch is used to treat the round regular scars. 2-3 mm punch with cutting edge is used to lift the scars. It is also done under local anaesthesia.

To Summarise

It is important to understand that the objective of treating scars is to improve them – not to make them disappear completely. So realistic expectation is important. Once treated, scars don’t recur unless pimples recur.

Pimples (Acne) is a teenage problem affecting almost everyone at some point of time in life. It results due to hormonal variations influencing the oil producing glands of the skin.
Dandruff does not cause pimples.

Here are few tips for such patients.

How to clean the skin?

  • Cleanse your skin 3-4 times a day with any mild soap or cleansing lotion. Too many washings can lead to dryness. Wash your face before going to bed, to clear off the entire make up.
  • Don’t scrub the face too hard. Be gentle with the pimples.
  • Don’t pinch, prick or squeeze the pimples.
  • House hold/self prescribed medicines can aggravate the pimples-be careful

How to apply creams?

  • The pimple creams should be applied very carefully only on the pimples -DON’T SPREAD THE CREAMS to the surrounding skin.
  • Most pimple creams lead to mild dryness- so apply small quantities only. Excess application of the creams can cause redness and dryness of the skin, so be very stingy with the creams.

“Remember: 1g can cover entire face. So you need only 0.2-0.3 mg”

What cosmetics can I use?

  • Don’t use heavy make up or cosmetics.
  • Oil based cosmetics can increase pimples, so use water based creams. Choose cosmetics on which it is marked “noncomedogenic”
  • Avoid over the counter medicines like betnovate cream- these can increase pimples.

Is there any dietary restriction to be followed?

    • Diet & pimples have no major connection- however, excessive and frequent consumption of dairy products, cakes, pastries, chocolates should be avoided. Dietary oil is not related to food. So there is no need to avoid oily foods totally.
    • It is normal for few pimples to erupt during periods/ pregnancy in some females.

“Remember: Pimples take few weeks to subside – so be patient”
